Holiday Letter 2006

Merry Christmas to all . . . .

What a year it has been! There’s been gardening in shorts and afternoon trips to the beach from January through November, camellias in January, azaleas in March, magnolias in May, crepe myrtles in July, angel’s trumpet vines in September and pansies in November, local shrimp and crab fests in the summer, oyster roasts in “r” months and fresh shrimp and oysters all year. Oh, do we love the south!

Gone are thoughts of getting the kids into college, getting directions to the next sporting event, and getting to and from Greeley safely in winter ice and snow. We enjoyed that life, but our time is finally, gloriously ours to spend as we choose. In Brunswick Plantation we have a beautiful new home on the signature hole of the golf course, a superb climate, interesting neighbors who are becoming good friends and many exciting new experiences. Charleston is a beautiful, historic city and only two hours away. We come back to Chappaqua periodically, our official home for now, but it’s usually for a short stay on our way to somewhere else.

The family’s status is in most aspects the same as in previous years. Kate is still into graphic design work; she’s become active at church; and she’s found time to make and sell beaded and wire wrapped jewelry. She spent a week in Nicaragua with Bridges to Community building homes for families in an earthquake ravaged village. It was a great opportunity to see how people, forced to cope with only bare necessities, live and love as well or better than the privileged Westchester-ites we see every day.

Rob is managing an indoor sports facility in Brewster. His summer baseball team’s record was unremarkable, but Rob won the team’s MVP award for the second straight year. In June Rob served as the assistant director of the Blacktop Basketball Camp at Greeley and in August he trekked back to Gettysburg to help run a baseball camp with his former coach.
Our Geppetto spends much of his off time in the basement with his woodworking. His custom baseball bat company is growing slowly, but steadily. Thanks to his former college room mate, one of Rob's bats found its way into the hands of Mets third baseman David Wright! Check it out on the web at www.yarddogbats.com.

Adam is in his third year at Hofstra and finally beginning his PE curriculum. We're hoping he can do his student teaching nearby when the time comes. His summer fun included anchoring the infield with Rob in a men’s softball league, where they made a slick double play combination and were a great one-two punch in the batting order.

Bob's joined the Fishin' Fun Club, which seems to eat more than it fishes and has learned a little about dodging errant golf balls while working in the yard . . . the hard way. Dy intends to take up bowling again in January, if the old joints allow. She's joined a group that plays bunco once a month and is taking Mah Jongg lessons. She's learning about the area by jaunting with the neighbors to Charleston, Wilmington and Myrtle Beach . . . and beyond.

We're looking forward to putting our new guest suite to good use, so please keep in touch. The welcome mat is always out.

Wishing you and yours a blessed holiday!

Pray for peace.
